Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which individuals:
1). acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions,
2). set and achieve positive goals,
3). feel and show empathy for others,
4). establish and maintain positive relationships,
5). and make responsible decisions.
There are 5 SEL competencies.

The SEL wheel below identifies and defines these 5 competences.
These competencies are taught within a tiered system. All students receive SEL instruction within their classrooms, which is a tier I support. The curriculum used within the classrooms is Second Step. Teachers also integrate SEL instruction within their lessons. Some examples of integrating SEL within instruction include: student check-ins and morning meetings, mindfulness practice after transitions, clarifying thoughts that lead to feelings, modeling persistence and determination, listening with empathy, emphasizing gratitude, facilitating conflict resolution, and fostering relationship skill building through partner and group work.
Some students are identified for more targeted, tier II interventions. Tier II interventions can include SEL group or dyads with me, the School Adjustment Counselor, to target social emotional learning. Groups are typically offered once weekly for 30 minutes during lunch. Students identified for tier II supports could also be referred for support with our Registered Behavior Technician (RBT). The RBT at Williams supports a caseload of students on the BEE Proud program, which is a Tier II, check in/check out (CICO) program. Finally, students identified as benefiting from tier II supports could also be referred to our mentoring program. The mentoring program here at Williams is a 2 x 10 model where students meet for two minutes every day for 10 consecutive days with an assigned mentor.
A few students may be referred for more individualized supports, including individualized behavior plans, which are considered tier III supports.
